Tonight is one of those nights that after the kids are both asleep I feel almost giddy with excitement. I tiptoe around in the silence smiling, making myself tea, getting out the chocolate, planning the next few hours that will be ALL TO MYSELF. I capitalize that because that is how exciting it is, =). Don't get me wrong, I love time with my children, but on those days that are hard the after bedtime silence is so golden.

This weekend the kids were sick. Snot out the yin yang, coughing, whining at an all time high, fighting and crying that gets on your last nerve. Why do we need to dump out all the straws on the floor? who taught you to spit chocolate milk? you pick to watch wonder pets again for the millionth episode? (I finally agreed with myself that sick days call for as much tv as requested). short cry filled naps, chunks of nighttime sleep interrupted by fevers and chills...and on and on. Sickness is hard. You feel so bad for you little ones and want them to feel better, but it is so exhausting to be constantly needed and taking care of others, even more so when they are ill. With no break, the patience grows so thin with no time to regroup. Parenting requires so much patience.

Luckily there were a few breaks where g and I could come back together, talk strategy, and each have a short break. And there was lots and lots of coffee drinking. It's amazing how these experience leave me thinking, "you just have no idea how hard it is until you've been though it" and you are almost instantly bonded to all the other parents out there. I'm so thankful that I have family and friends who can understand and offer support through texting, phone calls, and play dates. It is the support that gets you through, but man you have to dig deep. And I know that we don't really have it hard compared to some with medical issues, etc. I remind myself- be grateful for the things that are going well in your life. and I add...but get support for those that are challenging.

Thank goodness that the hard days are dispersed with a whole bunch of days that are easier.

Despite the challenging weekend, we had some good times at home (!) staying warm and snuggly...and with permissive parenting allowing all day tv watching and all day paci use the kids probably enjoyed it too. =)

Happy 3 1/2 years my baby girl. Thank you for the best hugs and kisses and providing me with something to smile about everyday. I'm so proud of the little girl you are growing up to be. I can't wait to make more memories together. I love you so much!

bodie lane, 22 months

Bo man, bo bo, bubs, bubbies...you're 22 months! So close to your second birthday, when I feel like we stop counting months and start describing kids ages by 1/2 years instead. But until then, here's some about you at 22 months.

We have been living in Madison for over 2 months now, and you did very well during the transition. The biggest upset has seemed to be with your sleep, but (knock on wood) you seem to be back to your usual self sleeping most nights all night in your crib. We have had some snow days and you want to like being outside and playing, but it is just so cold and hard to move in all the gear. You are usually a good sport for a little bit, then cry to go inside. You sure look adorable though.

Four days of the week Izzy goes to preschool in the morning so we have some alone time together. When the weather was nice we went outside and of course you love being outside. You like to climb, slide, and swing, and explore around. We also went to some gym playgroups which you seem to get bored of easily (or take to swiping other kids' toys which stressed me out) and coffee shops which you liked alot. When it's cold we stay inside and play around the house, have snacks, or wrestle around. You like to play with the balls, blocks, toy kitchen, read books, Mr. Potato Heads, play doh, arts and crafts, trains that go, music toys, and just explore and make a mess of things, =) You love to help in the kitchen and come running and pushing a chair to climb up on when you see me starting to bake. You also love to help your daddy work on the bikes downstairs and will scoot down to play with the tools as soon as you hear him tinkering. You really want to ride the tricycle and will get on and scoot around, but it's frustrating when you are just not big enough. sorry bubs... soon!

You like to play the puzzle games on my phone, but mostly get frustrated when your little chubby fingers click the games off before you want.

tackle and tumble play? yes please- my favorite! hiding under the blankets together, another yes please!

um, it's cold and I can't get up!

22 months can be a hard age for all. Growing desired independence but limited communication. Bring on the tantrums and crying for all! Some days you wake up fussy and just seem to melt in tears at everything. Those days are hard. Others you are able to play by yourself or nicely with your sister and all is well in the world. Some days you open up to brush your teeth, but most you refuse and try to run away, clamping down your lips together like it's nobody's business. You do like your baths, although sibling fighting is a 50/50 during bath time, but on a good day you both have a grand time playing "coffee" and tub time games with your other bath toys and cups. Your mood is often unpredictable, and we want to help you when things seem hard, but sometimes aren't sure what to do. Outings can be hard or require lots of energy, so we choose carefully when to ask you to sit in a cart or go to the mall. And why is it necessary to throw a fit at the check out desk every time we go to the library? Of all places! The nice thing is second time around- that we hope this phase will pass as we've seen with Iz and things will get easier as your independence, emotion regulation, and understanding of the world grows. We still love you more than anything.

You still have the most amazing smile. When I see that smile of pure joy my heart melts and all is well in the world again.

You still love to cuddle and it's the best feeling. Your paci is your comfort item, but you sleep with your elmo and scout and love to play scout's music before bed. You've done very well at being roomies with iz and I couldn't be prouder. You are still taking a good afternoon nap which helps each day. You are a sweet little snuggle bug and now like to read stories on izzy's bed all together before rest times.

You are more and more able to play with izzy and that's just about the best thing I've ever seen. I'm hoping it just gets better, although I'm remaining realistic that sibling rivalry may stay around forever. =)

We are loving our bigger place which allows us more room to run around and play.
Bodie still puts lots of things in his mouth. We wonder if it is his last 2 teeth (2 year molars on top) that are yet to come in and we are hoping because it is exhausting pulling things out of his mouth all the time, lol.

Bo bo, you are so much fun and are such a big boy now. You have shown some interest in potty training and have gone pee and poop in the potty! You sometimes like to wear big boy undies, which is adorable. You are talking alot and using 2-3 word phrases which is awesome.

One of my favs is when I come home from a run the first thing I hear when I open the door, "mommy's home!" We are the best of buds aren't we? You love to snuggle with your daddy, and show the same excitement when he comes home, but show a preference for your mommy when it's meltdown central.

Eating? Yeah, you do it alot! you love food and know how to make a giant mess, several times a day. You can feed yourself w/ utensils, etc. but often prefer the shovel method. You don't seem to have many food preferences which we are happy about, knowing that you'll most often eat a healthy variety of foods.

Bo man you are learning so much and I love to watch you grow. Your hugs are seriously the BEST! You are funny and crazy and make me smile. I'm so lucky you are mine. Cheers to onward and upward to the big 2!

I've been meaning to put together some birth-now photos for the kids for some time.I started with Bodes, as I feel particularly bad that I didn't keep up with details documenting his early development as well as I could have.I LOVED putting this together and remembering all our good times together and what a joy he has been in our lives.Sweet baby stage is so amazing, but putting this together has reminded me what fun it is to see them grow and develop and turn into their own little personalities.Each page shows pictures from the month (birth-12 months) and I tried to include some to show what stage, milestone, interests (crawing, eating, toys, etc) were happening that month even if they weren't the best quality.Hope you enjoy watching! As his 2nd birthday is approaching I'm going to work on 12-24 months next.

I know it's only the 5th day of January, but I must say since starting my 'picture a day' project I have found myself paying more attention to what is around me.

New Years Day 2012. It was a cold windy day, and I decided as I do on most New Years Days that it was a time for a new beginning. I usually make some ridiculous New Years Resolution such as, "Im going to only buy a coffee drink 1x month to save money " or "Im going to stop over analyzing myself and my actions". Well this year I decided no more ridiculous resolutions that I give up and on a few weeks in. Instead I decided I need to find a hobby that makes me smile (and that can be enjoyed indoors during a Wisconsin winter). Photography it is. I actually pulled up the camera manual on my phone and read it! After googling aperature and reading the page about 5 times, using a pink frog for a learning subject, I think I get it, =)

Also.... in reading the manual we realized that our camera was in a mode making it extremely difficult to take good pictures of moving objects (toddlers for example)!! After switching it over to the correct mode for our needs, and kicking myself a gazillon times that I missed taking good Christmas pics, I was excited to back on track. Seeing as I only understood about 1/5th of the manual language I think I'll just be practicing and feeling my way through taking better pictures.
Gotta love looking at pictures to remind yourself of good times and cement great memories into your brain.

Goodbye 2011

Tomorrow is the last day of 2011. A great year. Filled with a million memories.

In the quiet of a late night on the couch with a computer full of pictures I reminisce.

We had some great belly laughs didn't we?

and some times we tried something we didn't like...

or something made us sad, or scared, or worried...

but we found something to smile about again. art projects always helped.

of course high fives from dad help too.

and paint! messy glorious paint with glitter. that makes us silly.

sometimes we felt crazy. we screamed. sometimes loud.

but we found ways to get up again. toys help!

this year we learned alot.

we played and hugged and cried and rode our bikes.

we worked and played and went to the beach together.

we went to parks. lots and lots of parks.

we made really good friends.

we tried to get more sleep.
we watched babies grow up.

we had a party for iz biz!

bodes walked, talked...grew into toddlerhood.

iz started preschool (2!), and was fabulous.

g traveled and swam with sharks.

shell worked crazy hours, but had an impact on families

we had iz and mom dates at the museum

we had neighborhood happy hours

we went to starbucks and had chocolate sprinkles

we drove to see friends, flew to see family

we said welcome to the family oliver

we welcomed visitors, saw cherry blossoms in the rain

we took a scary trip to the ER

we swam, ran, biked

we packed up and moved

we said goodbye and hello

we gave up jobs and started new ones

we danced and did art projects

we were together

Reflecting on 2011, first a sadness comes over me as I look at the last pictures I took of our days in DC. Beautiful times in a beautiful area with my kids. I miss our parks, our walks, our smoothie shop, our friends. Even our crazy tiny little old dirty townhouse I miss sometimes. What amazing memories we had there. The life you had made, the groove you had gotten into. Did we have fun and friends? Yes! Was it hard? Yes! Did I seek a slower pace of life? Yes! But I think it's still okay to say I miss it.

What I most look forward to in 2012.... time with my kids and watching them grow up. Being together. Getting into a groove here in this area, making friends, setting down roots in some form. Family time! Love my g, and am so lucky to have you as my partner in this crazy parenting game. Outside time- can't wait. Seeeing my big family more and watching my oli grow up. Work? hmm...thinking more on that. Feels like a good time for the new year.

Whew, writing that down feels good.

Goodnight and goodbye to 2011. You were very good to us.

Christmas morning pictures

I adore Christmas eve. We had a beautiful tree this year. By Christmas eve, the ornaments were all on the upper 1/3 of the tree to avoid toddler snatching, lol. Looks so funny but made me laugh everytime I looked at it. The presents were the perfect touch to balance it out, =)On Christmas eve the anticipation of the month is finally at a head and the final preparations for Christmas morning are ready to be completed. I love digging out the bags of presents that I've stuffed in the back of the closet, in the trunk of the car, and that we've received for the kids and getting out the wrapping paper and getting to work while a Christmas movie plays on tv. I buy 2 different rolls of paper just like my parents did to differentiate between the kids' gifts. The last few years g has been assembling toys for the kids, and I'm starting to enjoy this being part of the Christmas eve tradition.

This year g wanted to get the kids bikes from work, so iz got a pink bike with pedals (as requested), and bodes got a tricycle. I wanted to get the kids shopping carts, so the tree was exploding with gifts this year. We also received huge boxes from the grandparents with amazing gifts for the kids (and us!). Thank you so much grandma and grandpa ayres and nanna and papa!

On Christmas morning iz woke up first and was exploding with quiet excitment and she exclaimed, "there are presents under the tree!!" She walked around looking at everything before quickly unwrapping all that were hers one after another. Bodes woke up a few minutes after iz had started and seemed a bit overwhelmed at everything, happy but not sure what to do. I grabbed the cameras and fumbled around trying to take pictures and mostly just watching the kids enjoy the morning. Didn't end up with many great photos, but that's ok! Iz helped bodes unwrap some of his gifts...and after about 30 minutes all unwrapping was complete! Wow...and all before my coffee, only Christmas morning could carry me through.

After the morning gifts the kids played around with their toys and bikes (and went a bit crazy from early morning chocolate), while g and I cleaned up and started getting ready to head to see mel, chris, and oliver!

I made an apple pie, marshmellow "fruit salad", (failed) cinamon rolls, and (forgotten at home) peppermint bark, to bring along. We had a delish dinner in St. Paul with mel and family and enjoyed more gift opening, but mostly time together.

It's so easy for me to get carried away with gifts this time of year. Just part of my nature and personality, especially now for my kids. With the recent move and changes we (mostly me) are working at being more fiscally responsible. It was hard to not shower people I love with gifts, but I'm working on small tokens (handmade, etc) and with verbal and written appreciation to make sure the people in my life know how important they are to me and how much I love them.

I feel truly blessed and reflect regularly on what I have to appreciate in my life. The list is long...very long. Feeling grateful today for all those blessings.

Holiday card 2011

We made a holiday card this year, but because of the crazy changes over the last couple months we decided not to send them out this year. I loved it, so had to take a picture. I hope that all of our family and friends know how much we love and appreciate them in our lives, even if they didn't get this card in the mailbox. We hope everyone had very merry holidays and cheers to the new year!

Iz started writing her name and had to take some pics. Was out of nowhere as we don't practice writing letters or anything. Maybe her preschool does? It was so cute when she wrote mom! (of course asking me, what comes next? Ok now what? For each letter) I proudly displayed it on the fridge of course ;).

Izzy( y is a little confused as to where it belongs) and Bo.

Next came my favorite. Mom. ;)

Followed by dad.

And then a whole mis match of all our letters together. Appropriately held to cover baby nudist. ;)

The next day or so she wanted to make a story. Had to get a few pictures. I always think these memories I will never forget and then I look back at some pictures and think- thank goodness I took a picture I didn't remember that at all!
So after she drew her pages of pictures she had me write the story. Consisting of being happy when it's sunny and they can go outside and also dad taking a shower and mommy going potty. Gotta love the three year old brain.

I'm hesitant to write this ( knock on wood) but I think age 3 1/2 and I are getting along. Less tantrums ( better knock on wood again) and more conversations, listening, brother hugs and kisses, and just pleasant moods. She is really liking school and is all smiles when bodes and I pick her up. She did say one day she wants bodie to go to school and do she can stay home with mom. I'm sure her teacher wouldn't mind she keeps saying she can't wait until bodes is three and can be in her class ;).

Iz at 3 1/2 you are creative, energetic, fun. You give great hugs and love to dance and wrestle. You love art. You love books and the library. You love to make snow angels. You really enjoy school. Cooking is also a favorite activity. You can tell us whats on your mind and are so interested in the world around you ( but why is the fish yellow?). You are potty trained- yippee!! You hate to wear underwear and currently refuse any pants except jeans, and prefer to be nude. Even in the Wisconsin cold!! You like to sing and are so excited when bodie understands your games and plays with you. You love to ride your bike and play with your animals. You make me smile. I love watching you grow up. It's probably not fun being the first kiddo sometimes when you realize your parents don't know what they are doing in parenting some ( or most) of the time, but we are figuring it out together , I think. ;) I've loved spending more time with you.

Christmas tree farm 2011

Today we ventured out to Haans Christmas Tree Farm in Oregon (!) Wisconsin. ;)

It was a near perfect day. Weather was high 30s and sunny and the kids had a blast.

We started off at the hay playground. How sweet is that?!

The last two years iz has cried when we went to cut our tree so we weren't sure if this year would be similar. I'm happy to report... No tears! She loved it.

We planned ahead and brought hot cocoa and candy canes, a perfect treat!

We also saw Santa and mrs Claus and bought a tree topper star, stocking for bodes, and a pink candy ornament for Izzy's "tree".

Lights and star! Izzy loved helping with the ornaments. Of course decorating a tree with two toddlers is hysterical. One step forward and several back. Remember to hang all the ornaments high. And stringing the lights around to look back and see them off the tree or bunched up in a different spot. Lol. Have to laugh. I love taking all the ornaments out and remembering when/who, etc goes with each one. One of my favorite traditions.

Each year on December 3rd I think about my mom more than usual, because its her birthday!

This is exactly how I remember times with my mom.

Endless hours of her drawing pictures on our blackboard, laughing, playing, singing, reading, soothing, encouraging...

Thank you mom. I realize more and more (especially since having kids, and now staying home) the hard work and total sacrifice. I realize the necessary breaks of phone calls to friends and naps on the couch. And the importance of little things- like making me glitter pictures to put on the wall next to my bed, and sitting with me at bedtime when my tummy hurt just calming me by being there.

Thank you mom. I love you so much. You are amazing and have so much spirit and beauty. Your giving heart has touched me so many days and I hope my kids have as many good memories of me with them as I have with you. I've always felt unconditional love from you and I'm so lucky to have you as my mom.

We drove to the bayres lair for thanksgiving. I cooked and we enjoyed a beautiful day with warm weather! We also skyped with mom and dad yeah! No pictures?! Hmmm ... Bummer. The day after we spent more time relaxing
together and more good food. We also enjoyed the weather with some time at the park and a walk to see the Christmas lights.

Most of all feeling thankful for family.

Today I'm feeling thankful for my health and that of my family. We have been so blessed with being healthy (knock on wood) and i know when I experience small things (being able to wear contacts to not, or small colds/flu that the kids get) it even reminds me more about how fortunate we are to most every day wake up without physical pain and with the ability to walk, run, talk, play,eat, etc. Tonight we went to the store with the kids, each grabbed a cart, and off we went running into the store while the kids giggled and we enjoyed the crisp air and happy sounds vs fighting sounds ;) we had fun. Usually I'm mostly stressed about the kids crying or whining, but today I more than usual enjoyed watching izzy pick out the potatoes and ask me what acorn squash was.(I still panicked at times, but less than usual with g reminding me that it doesn't have to be the fastest trip we can make and we can slow down and breathe, maybe even enjoy it?!(gasp!)) The why question being Izzy's her new thing-" but why is it shaped like that mama ? why?"uh....hmmm

Anyway- That pretty much sums it up. Oh... And I'm so thankful we can get in the car and drive(!) to my sister's tomorrow! Hooray!! Can't wait to see the bayres clan.

This week I'm blogging about what I'm thankful for. It's so easy for my mind to turn to the stressors/ negatives, and miss out or forget to focus on all the positive happenings and all the blessings big and small we have to be thankful for.

Today I'm thankful for being able to cook, having the time and even with a tiny kitchen I enjoy it. After all a tiny kitchen is what I know :) and cooling with my kids...love it.

I'm also thankful for cuddles. Quiet after nap cuddles. Love them.

Today i also felt thankful for a stroller that allows us to go out and walk/explore. Today our trip to the play place in the mall and the bookstore. I love crisp air and am trying to take advantage of every day over 30degrees to get outside before winter hits. A trip with no crying - an extra special treat!

And in the evening iz and I stayed up late looking at old pictures of her. She loves to talk about the adventures we went on and see her toys in the pictures, look at out christmas pictures, etc I love to see her baby rolls and smiles. Such a cutie.

Goodbye DC, Hello WI

It's hard to believe we've been in Madison for about a week already. The kids (and cats) did amazing on the trip

Stopped at grandma Wilhelm's for a visit. Was so nice to see everyone and feel so welcome when we are there. The kids were so happy to be out of the car!

Whew. Lots of pics and lots of good times so far. enjoying the blessings. Transitions are hard. I miss my friends, work, our place, Izzy's preschool, our neighbors, everything you grow to love and what is comfortable, what you know. I read someone's post on facebook a few days ago, and thought it fitting- "life is what happens when you pass your comfort zone". Working on embracing my chance for a little sliver of that French countryside here in wisconsin. ;)

Rest time here, currently loving the quiet with snow out my window. Loving that I'm still in sweat pants and that i haven't felt rushed or anxious all day. Maybe the grass can be equally green on each side? Hmmmm. Well, for today- Enjoying the small things. (oh and free coffee downstairs anytime. A coffee-holic's dream).

Bodie, 20 months

I have a few posts that i want to make (saying goodbye and road trip, destination=Wisconsin) but I'm skipping ahead because I have bobo on the brain. ;) He's turning 20 months in a few days, which sounds really close to 2- when u no longer keep track as closely by how many months they are and toddlerhood officially begins. Time flies. As my good friend Leah and her hubby Nick would say- we are guaranteed today, and we are pretty sure we have tomorrow. So- here's to enjoying each moment (okay to be realistic lets say most moments;))with the little crazies for the time we have together is a true blessing.

This month- bodies first haircut.

Adorable, right?!

At 20 months bodes you are full of energy, wild, outgoing, fun! You say "hi" out your window to people on the street and wave to people when we are out and about. You give the best snuggle hugs and I love the way you say "mama?!" for no apparent reason except for me to look at you ;). You are determined and have opinions. You like trains, and recently started putting the tracks together. You love keys and try to stuff them in any lock you can find. You have sim much excitement for things in life and will have the biggest "WOA" when you see something exciting (balloon, dog,ball, etc). You make people laugh and people love to be around you.

You are a wild man. Love to climb, run, and love going outside "side"- as u call it. You love watching chuggington show and call it "choo choo" when u r done with something you say "all done choo choo, or whatever it is you are done with.

You still have a good appetite for somewhat of a variety of food, which makes your mama happy when you eat apples and carrots. ;) You love to copy whatever your sister is doing. You just started to say , "mommieeee", in addition to momma. You love to swim and don't mind water over your face- just laughing and saying "nose" pointing to your nose when you get water inside. Fearless! You also still love to put your hand through your mom or dad's hair or your own hair when you are sleepy, and still love your paci. You now say, "momma, sleep" when you are tired.

Sometimes life is hard at this age. You dislike the car, and shopping, and in general sitting still, lol. You get angry when someone gives you for example- a piece of banana when you wanted to the whole banana. Or maybe you thought you wanted it peeled for you but then realized you wanted to peel it yourself. Things like that....make bobo not a happy camper. I wish I had infident amount of patience for you, because I know it's a hard time sometimes...we'll keep working on it.

but back to the happy times...

I love to hear your little voice call me, and when we ask if you want something and you do- you say, "crse" for 'of course'. it so cute. you love to plug in the vacuum (supervised of course) when it's time to clean up, and you are getting better at learning to share and take turns. You also like dancing and are a cuddle bug. I love you so much bodes.

Halloween 2011

Our stuff had been packed up the day before Halloween and was on its way to Wisconsin, so I had to make sure and leave out the costumes for trick or treating. This year I decided we would save the $20 and re- use last years costumes as this would probably be the last year I could do so with iz ;), and she always seemed to change her mind when I asked what she wanted to be...(red riding hood, wolf, rainbow butterfly, fairy, dolphin, etc etc). We had to laugh when we pulled the costumes out and they had stains all over them. Perfect. Just perfect. Well guess we will be re-using stained costumes. Poor kids!

We went to my friends renea's house for dinner and so that I could say goodbye before we headed off on the 1st
I yelled to graham to grab the good camera from my must have stash of things for the trip- but alas batteries dead and the chargers- on the truck to Wisconsin. So all pics are from the trusty iPhone.

Me and renea- oh I miss u already! What good times we had sharing "how many hours of sleep did u get last night" stories, and "has your 3 year old ever...." stories. Pool swim lessons, stroller walks, our failed book club ;( And the drinks, must not forget the drinks and good conversation! Thank you for your generosity and kindness, I'm so glad we had each other!

Iz loved trick or treating and literally ran from house to house fearlessly knocking at each door, even trying to convince us that some houses without lights still had a light on to say we should go up and knock. Bodes also kinda likes it- although just wanted to eat each piece of candy he got- chewing right through the wrappers. He did try a new form of trick or treating in which you " trade" a piece of candy from a previous house to a new one at current house, leaving the unwanted piece behind;). we met up with our friends bao, nancy and viet and continued to trick or treat before drinks and final goodbyes with our neighbors. A fun final hooray, Bernard street style.

Today was good.

Amazing. Not sure how long I was out for but long enough for iz to put all her animals to sleep, of course she wasn't at all sleepy.

Snack time brought a close second unheard of... The kids laughing together!

Bodes smelling a fall scented pinecone made us all laugh.

When the fighting started, I packed us up with our rain gear just in case and headed outside. We enjoyed 3 hours of outside time, walking, playing in sand, at the park, more walking- it was fab.

Some see sand volleyball, this mom sees giant sandbox! Even remembered the bucket and shovel this time.

Around the old town piers we saw this little guy on top- almost missed him- my penny (as my pops would say) for today. Well along with smiling toddlers together at snack time. ;)

Tomorrow is my best friend from work-barrie's- last day at work. Promised her im not going to cry!
Will miss her!

Looking forward to a few days with another best friend from ft Collins, maura, this weekend.

The weekend!

We are falling into our routine while g is out in Hawaii (today he's going down in a little submarine to the bottom of the ocean!) and very much enjoyed the weekend. We got our new double stroller on Friday so took some walks this weekend which I enjoyed. Saturday I went to my friend Barrie's baby shower and enjoyed being with her and her friends/family. Our neighbors took the kids to the zoo, so generous! Shout out to Nancy and Viet- thank u guys!

The kids were so tired when I got back and iz went to sleep at 5pm and slept until 7:15! Well...she definitely woke up when it was still dark and tried to convince me to go downstairs - to which I replied - stop kicking me and go back to sleep! wow it worked- amazing , lol!

Today we did some errands and also went to the park. The weather is weird here, feels muggy but seems like you should wear long sleeves - then are roasting. Shouldn't complain it's much better than summer, but I'm craving the brisk fall weather that calls for a sweatshirt.

During our park trip I found this clover. I was in love with it-looked like those glasses and a nose funny mask to me.

Iz found one she liked too.

And then when I tried to get a pic of us... Iz no likey...;) lol

Yes bodie was there with us. ;) he likes to try each thing at the park- sandbox, swing, slide, seesaw, ladder- then head to the gate to signal he is ready to venture on.

We watched the trains for a bit while Iz picked up rocks and bodie looked for a good one to try to eat ( yes he's 18 months and still mouths non edibles including markers, rocks, pla-doh, - hey no sand today though -yeah!)

And then home for some more play and errands.

The first pumpkin bread of the season, with help from chef izzy and sue-chef bodie.

And then on to my art project for this trip without g. One of my new coping mechanisms along with eating and drinking, ;)

Kid pics! Love having them by the table , we spent alot of time during snacks with sentences that started , " ah look at that one! , remember when...?, ". Great way to bring back all the old good memories plus I think my kids are adorable so it makes good art for me ;)

In other news... I realized one of my bad habits. Buying random crap during grocery store trips for the kids.

I try to make it seem better in my head by trying to make it a teachable moment or a project. As in art project with cotton balls that only I really got into- lol. Or telling izzy she can get either a balloon or cookie but not both. Um not sure what I was thinking the lesson was there? Or putting the spongebob balloon back at the front counter because bodie was fussing and saying it was because he was whining- when really he didn't care about the balloon a bit. ;) I also had another incident if buying "squeakers" at target on Saturday. Tried to find them for a pic- evidence of true crap factor is I already can't find any of them, already lost to the toy bins. Well guess I just needed to get that out. I will say i do have trips of not buying any small toy, as im well aware of the dangers of toddlers association of store trip = new toy, but I can't say I don't double take at the tiny toys/candy bags hanging by the check out. Im a sucker.

Moving on....
preschool seems to be going well. Ms Sara says izzy is doing well.

Another weekend project. City made on stroller box. Once again I was the most excited about this play opportunity. Bodes wanted to scribble on everything then eat the pens and iz followed with the scribbling- then told me to watch out and not color over the pink water at the duck pond- lol , followed by walking over the box, then yelling and fighting, lol- well we got a few minutes out of my hard work anyway

Actually I found a more practical use for the box in the Ayres-Wilhelm household- a room divider! Separate play areas- priceless!

The kids are so funny. They annoy each other to no end. But they love each other too. The best is when bodes is up first and hears her and yells "iz!" and runs to the stairs, or when they see each other after being apart and give each other a hug. Or after fighting for the same sippy cup a few minutes later izzy says "here ya go bodes! You can have it" Love love love those times!

Just heard from g- called to tell me he survived the sub trip ;) excellent! I was hoping he'd be back to join the chaos here at casa toddler mayhem. ;) love u babe! It's funny though at the end of the day I say to myself, " ah man I have to be gone all day tomorrow!" and "I should 've just really played no distractions with them more this weekend". Blogging helps because you see that you did have some good solid play times, and thats not doable all day! must mix it up for trips to the grocery store for princess balloons and cotton balls.

Definitely planning to take a sick day this week to pamper myself!

we sure know our food, don't we? remember when i'd come visit you in santa cruz and we'd plan our week by which places we were going to eat? oh wait...we still do that! I'll take one week in santa cruz on the beach, just me and you.....!

there is nothing better in this world than to have a sister.
A sister who is always there for you. Through thick and thin. To let you know that you aren't alone, to listen and provide comfort. To encourage, laugh with you, and to listen when you need to talk. Someone who knows when you just need to hear, "I'm sorry shell, that sounds really hard." A sister- also someone who can let you know your outfit or hairstyle does in fact look good, and to provide a steady hand when you need to reflect on not so great decisions, resulting in questions such as, "why did you let me get a body wave (read = perm)??. I am so blessed to have such a sister in my life.

As my sister is waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for the arrival of my neice or nephew, I've found myself wanting to know everything that's happening with her during this time of change. I find myself thinking, how is she feeling? is she nervous? excited? can she still bend over to pick something up? does she feel the same way i did when i was pregnant? i crave knowing details, resulting in face time calls where i ask..."pull up your shirt so i can see your belly!!, ok, just one more time before you go. now stand up so i can see what you look like ....etc. etc." it's hard to be away! I'm so thankful for technology that allows us to stay connected, and so that I can check in whenever i need my sister fix.

I also find myself missing those times, just for a bit, when it was just her and I. When we had whole vacations of days full together. with coffee, beach sunning, shopping, eating, more eating,..me dying at crossfit class, ...so many fun things. =)

so many great memories, great times. the bond of a sister is something I always wanted for my kids. i often wonder if a sister/brother could be as close?

thank you mel for always being there for me. a few more random pics of old times, (only 1/3 of the pics I selected are posting because blogger is annoying, sorry!)....

and then a few from very old times.... after all we've been together since day 1 (well for me anyway). (plus some support for the fact that momo will be cute as a baby, =))

i've also been thinking about how my sister must have felt with the arrival of biz and bodes (as me becoming an aunt grows closer). similar to getting married, a new addition to the family. growing pains when someone new is added to the family, a change. i think i'm wondering how i will feel? and looking back was i supportive enough, did I let her know that she always met the same to me, even when I was completely pre-occupied and crying, frazzled, at the end of my rope, or excited, busy, proud to share something new there were doing? i hope she knows. then i look at the pictures of us since biz and bodes, and I realize it's still us. you adapt. some things are hard. but you still have amazing, fun times together. they may be different, but the bond never changes. it is still there, strong and steady. knowing that even if you don't talk as much that doesn't mean that the other person doesn't care. you are still together, thick as theives, through thick and thin. realizing that at certain times in life you may be closer than others, but you will always be there for each other. supporting, loving, sharing. one of life's challenges- but once you figure it out...it's even more wonderful.

So to wrap things up...momo- hurry up and get out here and meet your new family!

Weekend fun

We said " see you soon" to g this weekend as he headed off to his Hawaii trip for work. We already miss him!! We kept busy today- biked to park in crystal city, then to old town where we walked around holding hands, had a snack by the fountain, played in the open space, and went to the toy store. I loved watching the kids play. They loved being out in the fall weather as did I.

Bodes, 18 months

I've enjoyed some time with bodes when iz is at preschool. I love that on one of the first most perfect fall days bodes and I spent an hour outside and he was perfectly happy playing in a dirt pile, looking at a backhoe, and playing with a tennis ball he found ;) so happy. Love this boy.

At 18 months you are... Wild!;)
Fun, energetic, smiley...you live to explore, "run", tackle, climb. You love dogs and will run after them, and make a "licking" sound with your tongue- you love to play outside, throw fits to show your frustration when you don't get your way! You love all kinds of snacks and still like to try new foods. You love wrestling with your daddy, and get so excited when you see him. You love books, dancing, and still your paci ;). You are labeling words and like to feed yourself. You like to go "pee pee" ( read sit on potty and pull off toilet paper). You go to sleep well ( knock on wood) and are so cute when I come to get you. I love watching you waddle around and explore the world. You love to play in the backyard and chase after the cats. You get ridiculously excited to see squirrels, wish I could bottle up that "eeehhh" and smile you have. Priceless.

It's labor day! Another weekend day...Whoohoo! It's 8:24 am and I'm still in bed- unheard of!;) the kids are downstairs with g. A rarity that mom is the last one up. This should definitely happen more often. When I opened my eyes and realized I was just about too excited to go back to sleep, lol so I'm here, resting, and "journaling" blog style.

I follow a blog I've mentioned before, www.kellehampton.com
and she recently posted about a favorite day she had with her kids. For me, yesterday was not my best or favorite day. We've been going through some challenges with parenting these days. Simply- refusal to wear underwear. It's pretty extreme, like keeps her home from her friends house and outings with mom because she just doesn't want to wear them ( or anything to cover up). Yesterday I got excited when I thought we had a breakthrough of wearing shorts to go play next door. But after naptime, back to the same. I've read pages and pages online, bored my friends by brainstorming what to do, causes, etc.., bought 3 new packs of bigger exciting hello kitty/tangled underwear, boy shorts, cried to Graham, called the dr. twice, and nothin'....
This parenting thing is hard. Real hard. Especially during these times when the hard stuff can overwhelm your mind and your heart can't stop worrying, trying to figure it out, plan, retrace your moves, wonder what to do. I want a favorite day again soon. Where there isn't a fight to get out of the house, where I have calm firm reactions to little one pulling my hair, diving on my face and subsequently tangling my glasses, where I feel strong enough to face outings even with underwear fights, and there would Definitely be coffee and ice cream. ;)

This week brings new ( and possible new) beginnings. Izzy's starting preschool! ( cue deep breathing in response to current underwear crisis) I'm excited and nervous- double dipped feeling as we say. ;) Graham's off to WI. More to come hopefully on that. The weather is turning cooler- rain in the forecast. Looking forward to that. Also counting down the days until I'm an aunt!! It's been so fun following my sisters pregnancy ( alot easier than your own!;)) and can't wait to meet the little one soon. My dream a while back predicted girl, 5lbs4oz , so we will see!!;)

Now on to face the day. With adorable munchkins full or energy, smiles, along with cries and tantrums. ;) we will make it!

I took a day off to spend some time with iz. We had a blast. Went to art museum, threw many pennies into fountains, had lunch together and rode the metro! We finished the day off with some ice cream and some park time ;) we were both exhausted when we got home!! Im excited for more fun dates together and similar one with bodes! Here are a few pics from our day. Highlight for iz would be making a wish and throwing pennies in the fountain, we saw 4 through the day!;)

A few pics from our short trip to a beach about an hour from us. A few good minutes of beach play followed by bodie trying to continually run into the water and screeching because I wouldn't let him ( plus a sign up saying bacteria water counts too high for recreational use) , iz wanted a snack but nothing that I brought, $16 fee to use the beach, and a lady telling me she felt really sorry for me, ( thanks my husbands out of town-i sarcastically yelled back) and we were on our way back to home sweet home.

A few good moments, all worth it. But still exhausting ;)

Biz n bodes

A few together pics, (it's hopeless trying to keep clothes on the biz...) I hesitate to write that they are finally seemingly turning a small corner in sibling tolerance ;) it's heavenly those times they engage and laugh with each other!

It's so interesting though at the end of the day- no matter what happened that day- when I see then sleeping I feel like my heart might actually explode. Sounds cliche, but that's exactly how it feels. Happiness. Pure happiness that you have these little ones to love, part of your family. In those moments when u aren't thinking about what sleep strategy u should use, or why they used to eat bananas and now don't, or how all the clothes u own are strewn about the room for the millionth time after discussing leaving clothes in drawers ;) it feels so good just to enjoy being near them, feeling needed, providing comfort- just pure unconditional love. Dang I like those moments...more please!

Bo man! You are getting so big and grown up! U smile and say "ease" everytime I try to take a pic of you. ;)

You are almost always smiling, you have started imitating what we say- my fav is the way u say "seesaw" ;) iz loves to try to get u to say words, and will go on and on ," bodes can u say, mom, airplane, tree, etc etc" and u mostly comply.;)

You love ramen noodles, and eat alot of other things too including chicken, strawberries, salad, cheese, apples, and spicy food too ,;) but just like ur big sis, no milk :( u like popsicles too'

You love blocks, and books! You love water and playing outside, u r a master climber and are determined. You love to cuddle, and eat everything!( yes sand and rocks too, can we say baby pica? :)) u love dumping things ( currently have a bag of goldfish crackers on the floor of car backseat) and love to dance!

You are still my sweet boy, and turning into the age of exploring and endless movement ;) you love to wow a crowd, breaking into a downward dog on the sidewalk in front of a crowd of people... Priceless!

Had to laugh after my "life is beautiful" post, this weekend has been challenging. Cranky kids, fighting... did I really write in a post that izzy listened?? :) lol, all part of life.

It is hot here. Dc summer is upon us. I've been thinking alot lately about life, our life here, jobs, family. Last night my friend and I were riding our bikes home and were talking about work and "dream jobs". When she asked me what my dream job would be, I didn't have an answer. Hmmm. Actually my answer was, I'd like to move to the French countryside. she promptly told me that wasn't a job :)

I've been struggling with the feelings of busyness, being in a rat race. Work, home, errands, chores, work, email, buy, shop, hurry, etc etc. I hate being constrained by money, hate that it drives our world so much. I dream of being able to move to a farmhouse, be more relaxed, stay home with my kids. But then another part of me wonders if I would ultimately feel the same, hmmm. Whatever the case- I'm craving a slower pace of life. More relaxed environment, surrounding, way of life, short drive to the beach... ah a girl can dream.

Today was one of those days. The really good ones. Ordinary, but really good.

Laughter, parks, dancing, good times. Oh there were bad moments too..." um kids can u please play with one of your gazillion toys instead of fighting?", resistance of sleep- whining for snacks, -but for some reason today- the bad times were easy to keep in perspective, seemed typical for life with 2 kids, and didn't get to me. Ah... It was awesome!

Nothing special, just a walk past construction sites, to the post office and a few other errands, and then...a bucket list item of mine, climbing trees :)

Today I felt like smiling.

Iz and I had our own birthday celebration the day of her birthday (and the day after her party). Bodes was sleeping, and g was gone working...it was a special time to have with just me and her... and cake of course!:)

Iz picked out her cake this year- Strawberry ice cream/chocolate cake , the heart cake I cut out of her leftover party cake, sorry no home made cake this year iz, but it probably tasted better! :)

Loved getting a few outdoor pics while we were the only ones at the park so I didn't have to feel embarrassed whipping out my phone to snap pics and encourage them to smile :)

Iz, at 3 you are fun, spirited, adorable. You are smart, funny, give great hugs and kisses (when I beg :)) your laugh is the best. You love to color, dance, play outside. You are creative, you love your stuffed animal toys and Froggy books. You have favorite tv shows , Max and ruby, Dora, Angelina ballerina, u can work my iPhone too well :). You are the pickiest eater! You love to jump, ride ur bike, play in sand, swing, and b naked :) you make us laugh.

For all the times I'm not as patient as I should be, I'm sorry. I've seen you grow this year in many ways. You have matured. You listen. You walk by the stroller instead of running away, :) you can play alone at times for hours, sit and do art quietly, and of course as dad would say , you dominate the park! Oh biz, I love u. These days I want to remember forever( well the good ones :)). I'm still learning this whole parenting thing- a wild ride.
I'm so glad you are mine!!!

Thank you to all our friends and family for the generous gifts and time you spent for iz, we appreciated it all!

After the weekend of play, cleaning, walks, errands- ikea adventure (read, um what was i thinking) monday came today and off to work! Its funny how even as i was driving away i think, bummer wish I could stay, gosh im going to miss them today, -and then when I went to get a coffee as starbucks i see a dad with a double stroller trying to manuver his way out of the store with all the kids, gear, drinks, etc- then coming back to get their muffin they forgot- again trying to maneuver around the door, with the stroller and gear, and I think gosh I was here with my two little crazies- funny how that works! :)

Although having coffee and lunch with a friend, actually sitting for the whole meal,- I can't lie, awesome!

Somedays I wish I could go back to this day...

And tell myself to give her one more hug, take a deep breath and be patient, don't worry about doing the "right thing", how much she is sleeping, etc etc, and just get to know her, love her, cherish her.

I also miss this-

And this-

The days/years go so fast.

Tonight I laid down with iz to give her a back scratch and to tell her the story of when she was born, our usual routine, and after i decided to just forget about everything I "should" be doing and instead just stay for an extra few minutes enjoying being next to her- just she and I. She closed her eyes and went off to dreamland, and it felt so good knowing that me, just me being there was such a comfort for her,

And I thought for a minute, I wanna go back to this -

And do things better,

And tell myself that it will be so hard, but just love her, kiss her and snuggle as much as you can, but when she had other ideas it doesn't mean you are a bad mom or doing something wrong. Try to stay patient, take breaks, ask for help, be kind to yourself, be confident, steady in your gut feelings, it's ok to cry when it is hard but don't let it last, or you will miss the good stuff.

So I was laying there thinking about this, and wondering why after a long hard day, when both a baby and cat pooped on the floor, 2 year old ate nothing but milk ( w/choc), bread, and a fruit leather, the kids fought over every toy, you changed 5 poopy diapers, and said plenty of things a little too loud and too mean, ... I look back at the day and think "why did I feel so overwhelmed, why couldn't I have been that cool mom today that plans arts and crafts with a theme that relates to the season, that implements calm steady time outs that are effective, and makes homemade meals toddlers can't resist( or atleast something with hidden veggies):) ", and then I think- heck somedays I am pretty good, but no one can be 100% right? So I thought blogging would help, my diary and reflection, to enjoy the good times, learn from the days where u feel crazy, bad parenting day happens doesn't = bad parent) and that kids are humans too - with their own personalities, needs, preferences, opinions, from day 1! Enjoy and love them for who they are , validate for yourself that heck, parenting is hard work, and take time for an extra hug, an extra minute to watch them sleep, acceptance of the way things are.

Ok that's out there , and it does feel better, :) and now I'll remind myself to read this post after/during my next bad day,:) ....

Because It goes way too fast, and it changes so quickly!

My sweet boy, gosh it just gets better and better (plus crazier and crazier) :)

Stats: 31 lbs

Temperament: so happy but starting to have an opinion about things :)

Speech: starting to follow some directions- goes to get shoes when asked ( or when wants to go outside), where's your paci,?signs toothbrush, bird, hat, eat, fish, water, more, knows his hair, words- mama, dada, da for dog and woof woof, boon for balloon, pop ( for bubbles) d for down, boo ( peek a boo), uh oh!

Food preferences: loves pretty much anything! Current fav, little tangerines and fruit snacks, noodles

Fork, spoon, open cup, check!

Activity preferences: climbing... Anything!

Loved the beach! Loves outside!

And...strong arming barriers,

I laugh at your feeble attempt at a kitchen block,

Love the park and love love water!

Aw bodes, loved our date on mothers day to the coffee shop and park. You are growing up... Which is happy and sad...i love u as a baby- your chubby cheeks, babbling, fat fingers (ok everything chubby) :), snuggle hugs, your screeching while you chase iz, your smiles to new people at park, store, anywhere! ... but I love seeing you explore new things- and get excited when you see what you can do as a big boy :)

Mothers day

For mothers day we went on a long bike ride around the local trails, plus stopped at a few places to let the kids escape the trailer for a few minutes. It was a beautiful day, loved having some family time to reflect on my amazing kids, and all that my mom has done for me (and the grandkids) in my life. Feeling very blessed...

Dear Bo Bo,
Happy Birthday my love buggie.
You are a smiley, sweet, determined, and smart little boy. We are so lucky to have you in our family. Thank you for "going with the flow" of life when it gets crazy, and reminding me to stop and give you extra hugs and snuggles when you (and I) need it. I treasure our time together. I love that you recently started to like reading books together. I love our few minutes together before bed, just the two of us in the rocking chair looking at books as you try to lift the flaps and get excited by the pictures of the trucks and Thomas. I ask you to pick out a book and you do,! then bring to me with an excited "da!" =)

I was so happy to have some quiet time alone with you on your birthday when you woke up from your nap and came downstairs to see all of your decorations.

This year has been amazing. You have been a fighter, through all the colds, congestion when you were so small, wakings from your naps due to a loud house =), and numerous pokes and nudges from your big sister. You continually have a smile on your face, reminding us to stop and enjoy the little things, and enjoy our time together.

You love climbing (climb up on this bench is a recent favorite) and you love to point to the airplanes overhead! A few days before your birthday you started really walking around, and it is so cute to see you waddle around the house and outside. You look so happy and proud of yourself, and we are so proud of the boy you are and all you've done this year!

A week before your birthday you started sleeping through the night! After a few glorious nights, we have been back to some night wakings, but thank goodness for everyone I think you are getting there!

you love trains, blocks, ducks, your swim class, being outside, airplanes, ball toys, the cats "da!", phones, music, dancing, and looking at books together... and true to second child expectations, you like whatever your sister is into! we love our family dance parties!

We had a great day celebrating your birthday just spending time together at home. Happy Birthday my sweet boy!

The Bo man is walking!

Today it's official that bodie is walking :) he has been taking steps for a month or so, but today you could see the cogs turning as he let go to walk around the room- so proud of himself when he reached his destination! And then he kept doing it again and again, go bodes!!
Would post a pic if I knew how from my phone :)
More when on the laptop just wanted to document before I forgot!!

the return to running

hard to imagine that this blog started when I set out to run a 1/2 marathon many years ago....wow. Needing some inspiration to get outside and run, I recently signed up for the George Washington Parkway 10 mile race, happening in April. now i just need to lace up my shoes and start running!!

10 month stats

28 lbs, 31 1/2 inches long
likes: crawling up the stairs, going after whatever his sister is playing with, playing with the cat food and cat water, blocks, music, flap books, standing up in the bath =)
fav. food: apples, yogurt, cheerios, noodles
sleep: naps-questionnable, night-usually up 1x
speech: mama, dada, "m" for more, "gee" for gentle (when we say gentle with petting the cats,=)) signs all done, yes- he undestands so much! (i.e.kick out game, go upstairs, no no, eat, milk, etc.)
motor: pulls up, cruising, starting to stand on his own for a bit, took one step, crawling everywhere!
- pulling socks off, can feed himself messy with spoon, drinks from straw cup, finger foods
